Coming from the Arduino IDE — what is fundamentally different here?
I've been writing sketches for five years. I'm trying to work out what I gain besides not having to compile. Could someone put it in a couple of sentences?

In a couple of sentences — the edit cycle. The script reaches the board over the air in seconds, and the firmware itself doesn't change. And the hardware is described as text in CONFIG: swapping a display is two lines, not a new build.
That's where an interpreter loses — it's an honest limit. But those pieces are usually tiny, and there are hardware commands for them: PWM, counters and edge interrupts are handled by the silicon, not by the script.
